The Kinematics of Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
I review observational data on the kinematic properties of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the halo of the Milky Way and beyond. The present data confirm previous claims that these small galaxies have unusually large central velocity dispersions. ‘Simple’ sources of bias such as binary stars, internal atmospheric motions, measurement errors and small sample sizes cannot explain the large dispersions measured in all dSph systems. Recent data suggest that in some of these dwarfs the velocity dispersion profiles are flat out to their classical tidal radii. I discuss how these results can (or cannot) be understood by invoking a variety of distinct models, including classical dark matter halos, tidal disruption, and MOND.

Internal Kinematics of Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
We discuss the quality of kinematic data in dwarf spheroidal galaxies, the current interpretations of those data, and prospects for actually deriving the mass profile in these galaxies. We then discuss stellar populations constraints on some of the models that attempt to explain the kinematics and formation of the dSph’s.
متن کاملThe Internal Kinematics of Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
The status of kinematic observations in Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) is reviewed. Various approaches to the dynamical modelling of these data are discussed and some general features of dSph dark matter haloes based on simple mass models are presented.
متن کاملInternal Kinematics of the Andromeda Ii Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
The High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer on the Keck I telescope has been used to measure nine radial velocities having a median precision of ' 2 km s−1 for seven red giants belonging to the isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxy Andromeda II (And II). We find a weighted mean radial velocity of vr = –188±3 km s−1 and a central velocity dispersion of σ0 = 9.3 −2.6 km s −1. There may be evidence for a ...
متن کاملOn Kinematic Substructure in the Sextans Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We present multifiber echelle radial velocity results for 551 stars in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy and identify 294 stars as probable Sextans members. The projected velocity dispersion profile of the binned data remains flat to a maximum angular radius of 30. We introduce a nonparametric technique for estimating the projected velocity dispersion surface, and use this to search for kinem...
متن کاملParametric Dwarf Spheroidal Tidal Interaction
The time dependent tidal interaction of the Local Group Dwarf Spheroidal (dS) Galaxies with the Milky Way (MW) can fundamentally affect their dynamical properties. The model developed here extends earlier numerical descriptions of dS-MW tidal interactions. We explore the dynamical evolution of dS systems in circular or elliptical MW orbits in the framework of a parametric oscillator. An analyti...
